About Bill
Hello, and welcome to Assistive Computing with AI! I’m Bill Hollingsworth, the creator of this blog and a passionate advocate for assistive technology. My journey in this field is deeply personal, rooted in my own experiences with visual impairment and a lifelong fascination with the power of technology to transform lives.
My work centers on assistive computing and computational linguistics, bringing together my passion for technology and language to create innovative solutions in accessibility.
Academic Background
My academic path has been diverse and interdisciplinary, reflecting my varied interests and the complex nature of assistive technology:
- B.Sc. and M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Georgia
- M.Phil. in Theoretical Linguistics from the University of Cambridge
- Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, focusing on Natural Language Processing
This unique combination of mathematics, linguistics, and computer science has equipped me with a multifaceted perspective on the challenges and opportunities in assistive technology.
Professional Experience
Currently, I serve as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing at the University of Georgia. In this role, I have the privilege of sharing my knowledge and passion with the next generation of technologists and innovators.
I am the creator of Grafstate, an innovative software platform that has become an invaluable tool for both students and educators. Grafstate empowers users to explore and visualize complex mathematical structures while receiving real-time feedback on their work. What began as a personal project to address my own accessibility needs in creating engaging teaching materials has evolved into a powerful solution for making mathematics more accessible to a wider audience. Grafstate exemplifies how assistive technology can benefit not only those with disabilities but also enhance learning experiences for all students.
